What is the difference between Single-phase EV chargers and 3-phase EV chargers?
If you're wondering whether you need a Single-phase or 3-phase EV charger, it's important to know how much power is needed. With a Single-phase EV charger, the current flows through one wire, while with a 3-phase EV charger, the current is distributed over three wires. A 3-phase EV charger can therefore handle more current and charge a car faster.
Single-phase EV charger
A Single-phase EV charger is connected to a Single-phase connection, which is standard in every meter cupboard. These EV chargers use the usual 220/230V connection in a home. The maximum power is 16 amps, resulting in a maximum charging capacity of 3.7 kW.
3-phase EV charger
For vehicles that are suitable for charging with a 3-phase EV charger, we recommend advising customers to make use of this option. However, it is important to note that many homes are not equipped with a 3-phase connection in the meter cupboard as standard. Such a connection must be specifically installed.
